Sort of. What at first glance appeared to be a TV news show ad up at the 46th St & Queens Blvd supermarket entrance, was actually a U.S Colombian election poster for the Independent Movement for Absolute Renovation (MIRA), a newish political party running the upcoming parliamentary election in March. I wonder if, and how many, local Colombians will be voting on the 14th.

I <3 Nixtamal

Motivated by a couple positive writeups of late, a few friends and I made a trip to Corona’s Tortillería Nixtamal to give their famed fare a go a few weeks ago. Verdict: Delicious! In fact, I enjoyed my meal so much that I returned the following weekend! Keep reading →

ay, 80s
So I’m sitting here, putting the finishing touches on a forthcoming post about Tortilleria Nixtamal while listening to the This Is It soundtrack (which turns out to be fun a tuneage for a Sunday-around-the-house kind of day). “Beat It” is playing and my brain keeps returning to the Alvin and the Chipmunks version like an irrepressible memory. Ay, 80s.

How quaint!
My building, and entire block, seem to have been part of a farm, according to the 1924 map on the nifty NYCityMap function.
The nyc.gov map allows you to look up all sorts of useful and fun info, like the addresses of local officials, police precinct, and the nearest local landmark.
Based on my building’s info, which was listed as having been constructed in 1937, one can infer that Sunnyside’s urbanization from the largely leafy, rural area pictured above to a city neighborhood occurred rather rapidly, in about two decades.

Suddenly I want some Tang and a grilled ham and cheese sammich
The year was 1989. An afternoon, any afternoon. Eight-year-old Monika has arrived to her godparents’ home from Mrs. Rutledge’s 3rd grade class at P.S. 91 on Aqueduct Avenue. She’s changed out of her uniform and hung it up on a hanger to her grandmother’s liking. Monika’s eying the clock as she finishes her cup of Tang and grilled ham-and-cheese sandwich. By now, it’s 4:25pm. Just enough time to wash the plate and leave Abuela Queta watching a novela (probably Rubi) on tv in the kitchen. She heads back to Abuela’s room, turns the tv on, grabs the remote, plops down in her comfy recliner, punches in 3-1 and this begins…

Friday was the shit
It’s the only logical conclusion that comes to me after reliving a (impromptu?) finale where guest judges Buckshot and Big Daddy Kane take turns performing verses from their hits.
So good.
