And then I saw her face–now I’m a believer!

-1Like a mirage in the desert, er, drizzle, I spotted her from the corner of 40th and Queens Blvd–Tamale Lady! I was stuck on the other side of a what seemed like the longest red-light ever, people. I swore that with my luck she’d wrap it all up and go before I made it over to her. But no! She was still there! Hooray!

Based on my first post about her, it appears that her day/hour of operation are Tuesday’s at about 9:30am.

So. The bad news (for me): her tamales aren’t veggie-friendly. She has salsa verde, salsa roja–which are filled with pork–and chicken for a $1. But the good news, especially given the weather of late, is that she also has champurrado, arroz con leche, and avena also for a buck.

The champurrado I bought, and promptly drank on the 40th St downtown platform, was like a warm hug from my grandma–so good!

It tasted like a thicker, cinnamon-ier hot (lukewarm, actually) chocolate. Though its temperature was ideal for instant drinking and given the amount of items I was juggling I could’ve easily burned myself with a scalding-hot drink, I would’ve liked it slightly hotter in order to have savored it and warmed my hands.

But all in all, it was a great treat that made the weather much more bearable. Yay Tamale Lady de la 40: ¡ERES LO MÁXIMO!

  • her hours makes me so sad. i guess i’m going to have to schedule a ‘dentist appointment’ on a tuesday morning sometime soon.

all i saw on the way to the train this morning was shady manhattanite angelo maragos blatantly checking out some korean girls.

  • PS: Saw her today (Wednesday) too. Same time tho.

  • Whoops. Just realized I’ve been a day behind for most of the week. Just to clarify: TL was first spotted on Tuesday, the 20. This week, she’s been at 40th St on Wednesday, Thursday, and today, Friday at 9:30ish.

  • score!

i just found her at 46th and greenpoint around 445, right next to the elusive mago lady.

i went for the salsa verde and a champurrado, both great. certainly a sound investment for $2.
